    Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV)

Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) and virus 2 (HSV-2), better known clinically as Human alphaherpesvirus 1 and Human alphaherpesvirus 2, are members of the human Herpesviridae family. This is a set of viruses that produce viral infections in the majority of humans. HSV-1 is the producer of most cold sores and and HSV-2 is the producer of most genital herpes. HSV1 and HSV2 are contagious and common. When a person starts to shed the virus, that is when they can spread it. Approximately 67% of those under the age of 50 worldwide has HSV-1. 1 in 6 people in the US have HSV-2. It is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections.
