Study Shows Greater Online Search Activity for Delta-8 in States with Cannabis Prohibition

A recent report highlighted how cannabis regulation is shaping online search trends. Delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol is commonly synthesized or derived from hemp, but it is still federally unregulated and illegal in many states. The report found that internet search interest in Delta 8 is significantly higher in states without medical or recreational cannabis.

The research team analyzed Delta 8 search activity by reviewing search data from Google Trends. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s honestly significant difference (HSD) tests confirmed the significance of the findings. The report discovered that searches for Delta-8 were roughly 1.9 times higher in states where recreational cannabis is prohibited.

Delta 8 use has been prevalent in states where cannabis remains illegal for several reasons. Delta 8 vape cartridges, edibles, and flower are available for purchase via online stores, smoke shops, convenience markets, and gas stations. Many consumers seek a readily accessible and legal alternative to illicit cannabis in states with no medical or recreational cannabis programs.

The analysis revealed that states without legal cannabis demonstrated 1.27 times more search activity for delta-9 THC compared to states with legal cannabis programs. However, search data showed significant interest in Delta 8 in states with legal cannabis. According to the CBD Nationwide report, “This trend is not just a reflection of a desire to circumvent the law. Even in states with legalized recreational cannabis, there is a significant interest in Delta 8 THC, indicating a nuanced consumer market with varied preferences and needs.” The study did not distinguish whether people are seeking different cannabinoid products, current policy, or scientific research, so further studies are critical to understanding the reasons people search for specific cannabinoids.

The report indicated that Delta 8 search activity suggests many consumers are seeking legal alternative products in states and municipalities with cannabis bans. This data possibly reflects consumer concerns with remaining legally compliant while accessing the effects similar to those produced by THC-9.
