Study Indicates that CBD Can Potentially Help Manage Aggressive Dog Behavior

WRITTEN BY: Kerry Charron

A study published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science explored the effects of cannabidiol (CBD) on dogs and found it promoted long-term behavioral change in aggressive dogs. The findings highlight the potential of CBD for promoting dog health and behavior. The study is the largest yet to examine the effects of CBD on pets.

The researchers analyzed data from 47,355 dogs included in the Dog Aging Project, a compilation of surveys completed by dog owners about their pets’ diets, lifestyles, environments, and health over multiple years. The owners also indicated how often they administered CBD to their dogs.

The researchers noted several associations between canine demographics and CBD use. 7.3% of the companion dogs in the US have been given CBD and hemp products, and 5.8% of those dogs frequently ingested supplements. Dogs in this category were on average three years older than those dogs that did not receive them.

Analysis also revealed some health conditions associated with CBD use. The highest prevalence was found among dogs with dementia (18.2%), dogs with osteoarthritis joint problems (12.5%), and those with cancer (10%). Dogs receiving CBD were also more likely to live in states with state-regulated medical cannabis programs for humans. The research team believes this association could indicate the influence of the bond between humans and their pets on owners’ decision-making about CBD use. Owners were 9% more likely to give male dogs CBD. The team also found that CBD use resulted in long-term behavioral change.

The study indicated that owners who gave their dogs CBD reported below-average aggression levels compared to dogs not given CBD. Senior study author Dr. Maxwell Leung stated, “Behaviorally, dogs given CBD products for multiple years are initially more aggressive compared to dogs not receiving those products, but their aggression becomes less intense over time.” CBD treatments could effectively reduce reactive, anxious, or aggressive behavior.

The research team advised pet owners who might consider giving their dogs CBD to choose a reputable brand product and monitor closely for adverse effects, such as gastrointestinal issues and diarrhea. The study provides useful insights into how CBD affects dog behavior and related health concerns associated with aging.
