Diet Changes and Colon Cancer

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month and this week, we have a video about diet as a preventative measure. Colon cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, with proper screening and diet. Much like air quality and smoking affect your odds of getting lung cancer, what you eat, since it comes into contact with the colon, is important. Health professionals know that a diet with lots of red meat, processed foods and refined grains was detrimental to colon health. Individuals who eat this way have a higher rate of colon cancer and had shorter survival times once diagnosed.

Conversely, a diet that includes high fiber, lower amounts of sugar and carbohydrates translates to lower risk. Doctors advise that any foods that increase insulin resistance, like carbs, sugary beverages and chemically processed foods, be avoided. In people who follow a more Mediterranean diet, with fish, fresh vegetables and whole grains generally have a lower rate of colon cancer
