The Role of a Genetic Counselor

WRITTEN BY: Carmen Leitch

Have you ever wondered about what the role of a genetic counselor is? This video from Mayo Clinic explores the duties of that position, with Teresa Kruisselbrink, M.S., L.C.G.C., a genetic counselor that works at Mayo.

Genetic counselors often have to help people make very difficult decisions, by informing them of the risks they carry in their genome, and what that might mean for their potential offspring or children they may already be expecting. They could also help people who may not know much about genetics navigate a diagnosis in their newborn baby when a debilitating genetic disease is sometimes diagnosed. Learn more about what can be a very rewarding job, and the path Kruisselbrink followed.
