Joint swelling doesn't exist just in the elderly. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that can affect people starting during childhood.

When the immune system makes a mistake and attacks its own cells instead of foreign cells, an autoimmune disease occurs. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition where inflammation occurs in joints because of the immune system's error.
