Aptamers in Drug Development: From Biomarker Discovery to Targeted Drug Delivery to Small Molecule Drug Detection

    Biography
      Dr. Jackson has served as Principal Investigator on over $5M in Small Business Innovation and Research grants. Dr. Jackson is also a recognized leader in the aptamer space, having authored twelve peer-reviewed publications on aptamers as well as 50+ posters and conference proceedings. In 2010 he co-authored the first market research report on aptamers. Dr. Jackson is inventor on twelve issued U.S. patents (and many corresponding international filings) as well as numerous patents pending. Dr. Jackson holds a B.S. in biomedical engineering and a B.A. in Spanish literature from Texas A&M University and a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Houston.

    Abstract

    Small size, highly selective nature, flexible chemistry and ease of manufacturing make nucleic acid aptamers attractive for multiple applications in human diagnostics and drug discovery.  In this presentation, we will describe the aptamer selection process and describe key challenges that have been overcome to identify aptamers that selectively recognize small molecule targets.  Finally, we will share examples of aptamers used for biomarker discovery, drug delivery, therapy, treatment monitoring, pharmacokinetics/dosing studies, and diagnosis.

    1. Understand the ways in which aptamers can provide advantages over traditional affinity agents in drug discovery and diagnostic product development processes.
    2. Learn about healthcare applications of aptamers for small molecule targets and cell surface proteins.
