    Biography
      Bill Lovatt is the Director of BioBank operations and the Continuous Improvement leader for the Brooks Life Sciences Indianapolis Biorepository. He brings a wealth of knowledge of CI methodologies to his role including DMAIC, LEAN, RCCA, and PPI gained throughout his 30-year career in regulated industries. His roles have spanned from test and design engineer, to operations leadership, and field service delivery. He brings a broad business and technical perspective, ensuring the operation of the BioBank is focused on assuring the security of the customers samples whilst driving operational excellence and employee satisfaction.
    • Continuous Improvement Specialist, Brooks Life Sciences
      Biography
        Jay Patel currently serves as the Continuous Improvement Specialist within the Services & Informatics Group of Brooks Life Sciences. Jay is an Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis alum and holds Bachelor of Science in Health Services Management along with a Minor in Public Policy. Jay began his Lean journey with Indiana University Health, where he worked as an intern with the System Transformation Team supporting the ongoing Lean initiatives in the laboratory environment. Jay joined Brooks Life Sciences in May 2017 as a Continuous Improvement intern to improve the efficiency of the biobank processes. In October 2017, Jay was promoted to a Continuous Improvement Administrator and then to the Continuous Improvement Specialist. Jay has led many process improvement projects in sample management operations, as well as commercial operations, saving the organization significant dollars.

        Biography
          Zachary Kogler is a passionate supporter for lean methodology and 5S philosophy who studied Industrial Engineering Technology and Organizational Leadership & Supervision at Purdue University. Between intramural sports and fraternity obligations, he was able to complete his Green Belt Six Sigma Certification, along with a 30-hour OSHA Certification.

          After graduation, he joined Brooks Life Sciences as an Operations Intern, where he assisted with investigating process failures, developing corrective and preventative actions, formatting Standard Operating Procedures, creating KPI metrics, and various quality initiatives related to sample storage.

          Zachary currently works at Brooks Life Sciences as a Continuous Improvement Specialist, supporting and advancing biobanking solutions to manage samples across the research continuum.

        Implementation of Lean Methodology in Biobanking Operations to standardize sample management processes is effective. Each process has ‘Value Add’ (VA) & ‘Non-value add’ (NVA) components. The non-value add components are considered waste – although it is important to keep in mind that certain NVA components can be required (NVAR) and enforced by regulatory agency and/or company policies. It is important to eliminate waste from the processes as it can lower the profitability, increase customer costs, decrease quality and even decrease employee satisfaction.
         
        The 7 wastes of Lean include:
        1. Motion: Unnecessary movement of people, parts, machines within a process.
        2. Inventory: Raw material, Work in progress, finished goods which isn’t having value added to it.
        3. Defects: People/material that waits for a work cycle to be completed.
        4. Over processing: Processing beyond the standard required by the customer.
        5. Overproduction: Produce sooner, faster or in greater quantity than customer demand.
        6. Waiting: Repetition/correction of a process.
        7. Transportation: Unnecessary movement of people/material between processes.
