Abstract

The COVID-19 Pandemic has demonstrated how much healthcare depends on the clinical laboratory, but it also has demonstrated how much opportunity remains to improve clinician’s and patient’s knowledge about laboratory medicine. Even before the pandemic, published research found that clinicians frequently are uncertain of what tests to order or what actions to take based on the test results.  In addition to these unmet needs, we also know that clinically relevant opportunities for further improvements in the total testing process are found more frequently outside the clinical laboratory than inside.  The chance to strengthen the cognitive and system components of the testing ecosystem present laboratory physicians and scientists with a major opportunity to address unmet needs of clinical pathology and improve patient outcomes.  During this presentation, we will explore the value of timely and accurate diagnosis and the role the clinical laboratory can play in improving it.  Case studies demonstrating improvement approaches will be shared along with strategies for driving initiatives to improve patient outcomes.

After this session, participants will be able to:

  • Define clinical effectiveness in laboratory medicine.
  • Give examples of how laboratory physicians and scientists can increase clinical effectiveness and improve patient outcomes.
  • Explain how to undertake a project on clinical effectiveness in laboratory medicine.

Webinars will be available for unlimited on-demand viewing after live event.
