    Biography
Dr. Karissa Culbreath is Scientific Director of Infectious Diseases at Tricore Reference Laboratories and Assistant Professor of Pathology at University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. Her primary areas of focus are clinical microbiology, parasitology, mycology and infection at TriCore. Dr. Culbreath received a Ph.D in Microbiology and Immunology from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN and completed a fellowship in Medical and Public Health Microbiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill through the American Society of Microbiology. She is board certified by the American Board of Medical Microbiologists.

    Abstract:

Whooping cough caused by Bordetella infection has resurged in recent years.  Dr. Karissa Culbreath will discuss the clinical presentation of Bordetella infection and its public health impact.  The prognostic value of B. pertussis and B. parapertussis detection for Bordetella diagnosis will be reexamined.

    Learning Objectives:

    1. Humans are the only host of B. pertussis
    2. Multicopy genes help to support diagnostic sensitivity
    3. Diasorin Molecular B. pertussis/B. parapertussis reagents can be used to detect B. pertussis and parapertussis with or without extraction
