    Biography
Dr. Culbreath earned her PhD at Vanderbilt followed by a fellowship in Medical and Public Health Microbiology at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Dr. Culbreath joined Tricore Reference Laboratories in Albuquerque New Mexico in 2010. Since 2011, she has served as Medical Director at Tricore and additionally since 2013 as Associate Professor, Department of Pathology University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center.

    Abstract:

Whooping cough caused by Bordetella infection has resurged in recent years.  Dr. Karissa Culbreath will discuss the clinical presentation of Bordetella infection and its public health impact.  The prognostic value of B. pertussis and B. parapertussis detection for Bordetella diagnosis will be reexamined.

    Learning Objectives:

    1. Humans are the only host of B. pertussis
    2. Multicopy genes help to support diagnostic sensitivity
    3. Diasorin Molecular B. pertussis/B. parapertussis reagents can be used to detect B. pertussis and parapertussis with or without extraction
