    Biography
      Dr. Matthew Ferber is an associate professor and consultant in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology serving as a Co-Director for the Genomics Laboratory since 2005. He was the founder and director of the Clinical Genome Sequencing Laboratory at Mayo from 2012 to 2018. He has worked very closely with Mayo Clinic's Center for Individualized Medicine over the years serving as a founding member of the Clinomics program, which created the Individualized Medicine Clinic and Mayo's Diagnostic Odyssey Services. In October 2018 under the leadership of Dr. Ferber, Mayo's consumer genomic testing product, Mayo Clinic GeneGuideTM, launched.

    Abstract

    With the completion of the human genome nearly two decades ago, consumers, patients, and physicians are wondering when genetic testing will go PRIME TIME.  While the diagnostic utility of genetic testing continues to steadily increase, the idea of population health driven genetic testing is just getting started.  This talk will explore how genetic testing can be used to better manage the healthcare of large populations, the challenges and concerns with launching such a program, and how it is different than diagnostic genetic testing.

    Learning Objectives:

    1. Define how genetic testing fits into population health management strategies

    2. Understand how genetic testing for screening purposes is different than that used for diagnostic purposes

    3. Describe the value of population health genetic screening to society
