Procalcitonin and its Importance in the Emergency Department

    Biography
      Dr Feinstein trained in internal medicine in Baltimore at St Agnes hospital and then at rush medical center for critical care medicine. He is an adult Intensivist and associate clinical Professor of medicine at university of North Carolina. He has extensive research in septic shock and antibiotic administration. He has been a pioneer in antibiotic stewardship and sepsis care.

    This webinar is designed to educate on the kinetics of procalcitonin which is a marker of sepsis and bacterial infection.  We will discuss the use specifically in patients presenting to the emergency room. The webinar will clarify the positive predictive value in the Emergency Department as well as the negative predictive value in the undifferentiated patient.

    Key learning objectives:

    • Understand the role of pct for acute presentation in the emergency dept. of upper resp infection and sepsis
    • Understand appropriate use of pct and how to interpret pct levels in the emergency department
