Urine Toxicology Testing in Support of Pain Management

Speaker

Abstract

Chronic pain is a major problem in most countries. Specialized pain management physicians often see and treat patients with chronic pain, and one type of therapy that may be prescribed is an opioid analgesic.  Due to the abuse and addiction potential of opioids, patients on chronic opioid therapy are tested periodically for compliance using urine drug testing.  Urine toxicology results can help providers assess whether a patient has been taking their prescribed medications and abstaining from other medications, and can help preserve the trust between a patient and the health care team in sensitive situations.  This webinar will discuss urine drug testing as it relates to the management of chronic pain, and will cover frequently encountered drug/metabolite patterns that may influence the interpretation of compliance with opioid therapy.
