    Biography

      Dr. Ali Ertürk is director of the Helmholtz Institute for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (iTERM) in Munich, Germany (since 2019), P.I. at the Institute for Stroke and Dementia (ISD) at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich (since 2014) and Adjunct Professor at Rochester University in New York, NY, USA (since 2017). After his undergraduate studies at Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey, he did his Ph.D. at the Max Planck Institute for Neurobiology in Munich, followed by a postdoc at Genentech in San Francisco, CA, USA. By combining biomedical research with artificial intelligence (AI) and nanotechnology, he and his team are constantly pushing the limits in neuroscience, cancer research, and tissue engineering. His lab develops technologies to image large biological tissues at cellular resolution to provide a holistic understanding of complex cellular mechanisms and networks. Among many honors and awards, he obtained the Rolf Becker Award (2020) and the ERC Consolidator Grant of the European Research Council (2020); he is researcher of the Cure Alzheimer’s Foundation (2019) and was awarded with the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung Award (2019). Besides doing breakthrough science he is also well known for his photography.

    We develop and implement technologies to solve some of the major bottlenecks in biomedical research. In particular, we establish new imaging approaches to visualize intact biological specimens (such as whole mouse organs and bodies, entire human organs, organoids, and engineered tissues) at the cellular and molecular level without sectioning. For example, we can visualize cancer metastasis, infections, inflammation, neurodegeneration, and drug targeting at single-cell level in whole transparent samples. We combined whole-sample imaging with artificial intelligence and engineered tissues of human diseases for personalized drug development. Overall, we believe that hypothesis-free biomedical research using unbiased technologies can substantially accelerate scientific discoveries and help to solve major health care problems sooner than anticipated.
