    Plant stress

Plant stress refers to any external condition that negatively impacts the growth of a plant. Plant stress can cause adverse events in the plant's lifecycle such as altered gene expression, reduced cellular metabolism, or hindrance of growth. Many conditions can cause plant stress, including extreme temperature (hot or cold) or water (drought or flood), chemical contamination, and infestation by insects of microbes.
