Smooth muscle cells are characterized by a spindle shape and a single, long nucleus and they contract involuntarily. These cells undergo significant configurational changes during contraction and relaxation. Smooth muscle cells are located in hollow visceral organs including the liver, pancreas, and intestines where they aid in digestion and absorption of nutrients.
