White Earth Nation's Waabigwan Mashkiki: Pioneering Legal Adult-Use Cannabis Sales

Adult-Use cannabis, otherwise known as recreational cannabis, just took a step forward with the opening of a new cannabis dispensary in Mahnomen, Minnesota, by the Native American cannabis manufacturing plant, Waabigwan Mashkiki. This news marks only the second dispensary in Minnesota to sell recreational cannabis—the first being from the tribal nation of Red Lake—and comes after recreational cannabis became legal in the state on August 1.

Waabigwan Mashkiki is a $10 million, state-of-the-art cannabis growing plant that opened in 2021 by growing and selling medical cannabis but has been preparing for the legalization of recreational cannabis ever since. The plant is owned by White Earth Nation, also known as the White Earth Band of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe.

“Others were racing to the market to capitalize on this unique time in Minnesota history,” said Alexander Oxendine, who is the General Manager of Waabigwan Mashkiki. “We have been preparing for this day for years. Because of our location, dedication to excellence, and unique and proven growing and processing practices, our product is simply better.”

Waabigwan Mashkiki currently offers eight types of cannabis flowers with Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) levels ranging from 12.2 percent to 21.7 percent, along with 16 types of pre-rolls with THC levels ranging from 12.2 percent to 18.5 percent. The facility was designed by cannabis production experts who hand-pick all cannabis products and slowly grown over a period of nine weeks which is one week longer than other cannabis facilities.

“Our plant combines the latest science and production techniques with traditional Ojibwe practices that respect connections with all living things,” said Michael Fairbanks, Chairman of the White Earth Tribal Nation. “The result is high-quality products that are manufactured responsibly.”

All cannabis products can be ordered at their website, and they are currently developing an app where customers can purchase their products, as well.

As always, keep doing science & keep looking up!
