New Type of Neuron!

WRITTEN BY: Nouran Amin

Researchers have discovered a new type of neuron (brain cell). This neuron was not found in mice and researchers believe it is only unique to primates and maybe even humans. The discovery of the neuron comes from two separate research groups; one from Hungary and the other from the U.S.

The two research groups were studying neurons in the part of the brain known as the cortex; the brain outermost layer crucial to human consciousness. They found gene expression that is different than all other neurons studied previously. In particular, the researchers found that neurons shaped strangely held different gene expression. The new neuron is hypothesized to play a role in certain brain processes not exhibited by mice.
