    Biography
Dr. Meera Chitlur is Professor of Pediatrics and Barnhart-Lusher Hemostasis Research Endowed Chair at Wayne State University School of Medicine and practices in the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the Children's Hospital of Michigan. She is the Director of the Hemophilia and Hemostasis Treatment Center and The Jeanne M.Lusher Special Coagulation Clinical Research Laboratory at Children's Hospital of Michigan. She earned her MBBS degree at Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences in Bangalore, India and completed her postgraduate training as a pediatric resident at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI. She then completed her fellowship in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Children's Hospital of Michigan. Dr.Chitlur is a member of the American Society of Hematology (ASH), Hemophilia and Thrombosis Research Society (HTRS), and International Society of Thrombosis and Hemostasis (ISTH). She was elected to membership on the National Hemophilia Foundation's (NHF) Medical and Scientific Advisory Council in 2014, nominated for the 2015 "America's Best Physicians" directory, elected to the HTRS Board of Directors in 2015, selected by peers for inclusion in Hour Detroit Magazine's list of "Top Docs", and won the Resident Teaching award in 2016. Her research interest is in global hemostasis assays, particularly Thromboelastography and Thrombin Generation. She is currently an Internationally recognized expert in Thromboelastography and has written the guidelines for performing Thromboelastography in Hemophilia. Dr. Chitlur has also authored approximately 60 peer reviewed publications, case reports, review articles, editorials, and book chapters.

    Abstract:

Coagulation testing methodologies are often challenging for new users to understand.  Terminology may be confusing and the methodologies are sensitive to many variables.  Consideration of biological, preanalytical, and analytical conditions is critical to reporting accurate results.  This webinar will be focused on explaining methodologies, including tests used to screen for bleeding and thrombotic disease states, determining coagulation factor levels, confirming the presence of lupus anticoagulants, and tests utilized to diagnose von Willebrand Disease.  In addition, platelet function testing and global hemostasis assays will be briefly covered.

    Learning objectives:

    • Review hemostasis-related laboratory studies, including coagulation testing, von Willebrand factor assays, and platelet studies
    • Present all relevant terminology, methodologies, test selection, test performance sequence, and interpretation
    • Discuss use of laboratory testing to evaluate a range of bleeding disorders
