Impact of Two Formulations of Buprenorphine on Postsurgical Condition in Mice

    Biography
      Dr. Herndon obtained her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Oregon State University, where she spent time at the Oregon National Primate Center, including working in a Huntington's Disease research laboratory. Following completion of veterinary school, Dr. Herndon began a three year post-doctoral research residency for veterinary laboratory animal medicine at Columbia University. While in this role, Dr. Herndon oversees the general animal care in the facilities, trains investigators on aseptic technique and surgical skills in rodent models, performs veterinary protocol review consultations, is an active participant in IACUC meetings, has participated in site visits from the USDA, Department of Health, and AAALAC, and assists with the anesthesia monitoring of USDA regulated species. She completed a research project comparing mortality rates, selected inflammatory cytokines, and overall condition of mice administered buprenorphine SR to buprenorphine HCL in a murine model of polymicrobial sepsis, the results of which were published in Journal of Comparative Medicine, December 2016. She will complete her residency June 2017.

    Several regulatory bodies require that animals used in biomedical and behavioral research exposed to procedures that may cause more than momentary or slight pain or distress should be provided with appropriate sedation, analgesia, or anesthesia. However, use of analgesics in certain murine models is a topic of debate, as analgesics have the potential to have an effect on biological responses of an animal.  A common analgesic used in research is the synthetic opiate buprenorphine HCL. Sustained release Buprenorphine (Bup SR) is a sustained-release injectable formulation of buprenorphine that has grown in popularity due to its extended duration of action compared to standard buprenorphine. This presentation will explore the findings of several research reports comparing buprenorphine HCL to sustained release formulations of buprenorphine with regards to effects on experimental data and postsurgical condition in mice.
