Prep for Success: From human microbiome exploration to advanced SARS-CoV-2 testing in wastewater

Speakers
  • Senior Staff Scientist, Cell Biology, Life Sciences Solutions Group, Thermo Fisher Scientific
    Biography
Alexander "Sasha" Vlassov is a Senior Manager, Research and Development, at the Austin site of Thermo Fisher Scientific. Dr. Vlassov has developed multiple product lines including reagents for exosome and microbiome research, siRNA, tools for miRNA functional analysis, and transfection reagents. For the last two years his team is developing advanced technologies for plasmid DNA purification, with primary downstream application being ExpiCHO and Expi293 transient expression systems.
    • Staff Scientist - Molecular Biology at Thermo Fisher Scientific
      Biography

Jasti Madhu has been working in the field of Molecular Biology for 15+ years and the Thermo Fisher Scientific R&D department for the last 4 years. She actively supports the development of SARS-CoV-2 test kits that isolate nucleic acid from a variety of sample types. Her passions lie in research fields of genetics, biochemistry, and microbiology. Recently her research has been focused on the Human Microbiome, comparing gut health under different dietary constraints or the presence of probiotics.

      • R&D Staff Scientist, Sample Preparation BioSciences, ThermoFisher Scientific, USA
        Biography
Emily has worked as part of R&D at the Austin site for over 15 years. During her tenure, she has lead and contributed to multiple projects including sample preparation and analysis of nucleic acids (including real-time PCR) from a wide range of sample types, library preparation for sequencing, and purification and analysis of exosomes. Recently and for the past several years, her efforts have shifted to the development of high-throughput and automated DNA/RNA extraction methods from clinical samples (such as biofluids) for use within larger analysis workflows ranging from such as Pharmacogenomics, Pathogen/Microbial Detection, Disease studies and Biomarker studies.

        Abstract

        DATE:  December 15, 2020

        TIME:   10:00am PST

Scientists from Thermo Fisher Scientific will walk us through the world of microorganisms. They will discuss their most recent research on viruses, bacteria and fungi, and highlight exciting products developed specifically for this kind of research. Some microbes are our friends and have a long list of functions beneficial to human health, while some other bacteria and viruses undermine our health. The first half of the webinar address research on human microbiome residing within our gastrointestinal tract, and gut health through use of probiotics and dieting. The second half will overview the spread of SARS-CoV-2, and ways to robustly detect this virus in human stool, saliva and swabs, as well as to monitor virus in the wastewater samples.

        Learning Objectives:

        • SARS-CoV-2 molecular testing in human samples and wastewater
        • Understanding the roles probiotics and dieting play on gut health
        • Sate of the art human microbiome research – latest updates and innovative research tools
        • Human microbiome and viral invasion

Webinars will be available for unlimited on-demand viewing after live event.
