Abstract

New technological developments in automated Hematology analyzers continue to transform the hematology laboratory. Today, hematology analyzers can collect more information about cell characteristics, subsequently improving disease detection. Advanced systems can perform a complete blood count (CBC) and classify multiple cell types, including five or more subclasses of mature white blood cells. They also produce improved flagging of abnormal results for further microscopic review.

Hematology analyzers are available from multiple manufacturers and employ different detection methods. In this webinar, Don Wright, Abbott Scientific Affairs Manager will discuss the general principles of automated WBC and differential technology, processing limitations associated with available options, and next-generation developments designed to enhance quality of results.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe electronic impedance technology in cell counting and WBC differentiation by automated hematology analyzers.
  • Review light scatter technologies that use multiple angles of detection, the principle of hydrodynamic focusing and laminar flow.
  • Discuss the impact of interfering substances on automated WBC differential analysis.
  • Highlight key trends in automated differential analysis.
