    Lung development

Lung development is the broad biological process by which the lung organs are formed beginning early in fetal growth. The first step of lung development involves the formation of conducting airways. Next, the gas exchange area of the lungs is formed and subsequently enlarged. The expansion of the gas exchange area, known as alveolarization, continues slowly into adolescence and young adulthood.
