Laboratory Automation 2021

Welcome to the 5th Annual Laboratory Automation Virtual Event; a free virtual conference for professionals interested in the most recent technologies for today’s labs. Lab automation is a multi-disciplinary approach benefiting from technologies in the lab that facilitate new and improved processes.

The technology present in laboratories is imperative to timely research and data output. This event will further the discussion of the advancements made regarding instrumentation and methodologies used to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of research in the lab.

    Biography

      In parallel to his academic career, Christoph has gained significant industry and entrepreneurship experience: He successfully commercialized microfluidic technology for genomic applications (e.g. licensed to Diagenode for the BioRuptor OneTM), collaborated with big pharma (including Roche and GSK) and worked for many years as a consultant. Furthermore, he is the scientific founder and CSO of Velabs Therapeutics (www.velabs-therapeutics.com), an antibody discovery company that successfully secured 2 investment rounds within just one year and which is constantly growing and acquiring deals with large pharma industry.

      Christoph holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry (directed evolution) from the University of Frankfurt and did postdoctoral studies at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (Cambridge, UK) and the Institute de Science et d'Ingénierie Supramoléculaires (ISIS) in Strasbourg, France. Before moving to Switzerland he lead a group at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany.

      Biography

        Ankita Acharya is a LIMS Implementation Expert with CloudLIMS.com. She has worked with laboratories across the globe and specializes in understanding a laboratory's workflow requirements and assisting them with a LIMS' implementation and configuration to automate their unique laboratory workflow. With a strong inclination towards understanding and researching how laboratories and data management is evolving globally, she collaborates with her clients, partners, and end-users to see through and contribute across unique automation requirements.

      • Ryan Bailey, PhD
        Robert A. Gregg Professor of Chemistry, University of Michigan
        Biography

          Ryan C. Bailey is the Robert A. Gregg Professor of Chemistry at the University of Michigan. His group is generally focused on the development of enabling microscale technologies for applications in precision medicine. Prof. Bailey has a strong interest in creating highly multiplexed detection strategies for in vitro diagnostic applications and his group has pioneered the application of silicon photonic microring resonator arrays as a versatile platform for biomolecular detection. This technology is being commercialized by Genalyte, Inc. Prof. Bailey’s group is also developing a suite of microfluidic tools for sample-limited bioanalyses with a particular emphasis on enabling low input epigenomic profiling. In recognition of his accomplishments, Prof. Bailey has been recognized with awards including a US National Institutes of Health Director’s New Innovator Award, a Sloan Foundation Fellowship, the Arthur F. Findeis Award for Achievements by a Young Analytical Scientist, the Pittsburgh Conference Achievement Award, the Benedetti-Pichler Award from the American Microchemical Society, and the American Chemical Society Division of Analytical Chemistry Award in Chemical Instrumentation.

          Biography
            Amar Basu is vice-president of engineering research at Bioelectronica, while on entrepreneurial leave from Wayne State University where he is associate professor of electrical and computer engineering and biomedical engineering. He received a BSE and MSE in electrical engineering in 2001 and 2003, an MS in biomedical engineering in 2005, and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering in 2008, all with honors from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. His dissertation, at the NSF Center for Wireless Integrated Microsystems, investigated interfacial-tension based microfluidic actuators. In 2008, Amar joined Wayne State University, where he has built a research program in multiphase microfluidics and microelectronics for high-throughput screening health monitoring. His lab has published in a variety of areas including digital assays, droplet microfluidics, manipulation using interfacial tension gradients, droplet trapping with laser-based thermocapillary tweezers, sensing based on interfacial phenomena, and wearable sensors for health monitoring. He has received >$2M in funding, the NSF BRIGE award, and the WSU college of engineering outstanding faculty award. Amar serves on the program committees of the Society of Laboratory Automation and Screening (SLAS), IEEE Transducers, and IEEE Sensors conferences.
          • Eric Brouzes, PhD
            Associate Professor, Department of Biomedical Engineering Stony Brook University
            Biography

              Eric Brouzes joined Stony Brook University as a Research Assistant Professor in 2010, and he is currently Associated Professor in the department of Biomedical Engineering. After majoring in physics at ESPCI in Paris, he studied the effect of mechanotransduction on the development of fly embryos at the Institut Curie, where he received his Ph.D. He later pursued postdoctoral studies in the lab of Norbert Perrimon in the Genetics Department of Harvard Medical School. He subsequently worked as a senior scientist for start-up companies RainDance Technologies and Metagenomix, where he discovered the world of microfluidics, before returning to academia.

              Brouzes is researching cellular heterogeneity and its role in healthy and diseased tissues, such as cancer. His lab focuses on developing novel microfluidic approaches to perform quantitative, functional and genomic measurements at single-cell resolution. Those platforms rely on droplet and single-phase microfluidic technologies to enable precise manipulation and processing of single cells at low and high throughput.

            • Craig Johnston
              Lab Automation Commercial Lead, Automata
              Biography

                Craig Johnston was asked to present a new market for Automata to enter at his interview for the company.  With no robotics experience and no laboratory experience - he chose lab automation.  A year and a half later and lab automation has become Automata's largest market, and Craig has had the chance to work with companies from tiny biotech start-ups, established pathology labs and some of the UK's largest robot deployments.

              • Sue Keeler
                Managing Director, Colibri Scientific
                Biography

                  Sue Keeler is Managing Director and founder of Colibri Scientific.  She has worked in pharmaceutical and CRO industries for more than 30 years.  After spending 15 years as a GLP laboratory-based scientist, Sue transferred into the clinical space, where she held a variety of global positions within major pharma.

                  Having experienced the complexities of clinical sample management first-hand, Sue realised the gap for the provision of fast and flexible sample services for early phase studies.  Colibri Scientific was set up to address these challenges.

                • Ali Lashkaripour, PhD
                  Research Assistant, Densmore lab Boston University
                  Biography

                    Ali Lashkaripour holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Boston University, and is an incoming post-doctoral fellow at Stanford University. His research focuses on design automation of continuous flow microfluidic droplet-based devices using data-driven approaches such as machine learning and rapid prototyping methods including micro-milling.

She received her undergraduate degree in Medical Technology (MT ASCP), with a minor in Microbiology from the State University of New York @ Buffalo. Her graduate studies were conducted at the University of Maryland in Molecular Microbiology with an emphasis in infectious diseases and informatics. Her unique career combines a Ph.D. with 20+ years of experience in working in laboratories and leveraging data management tools, LIMS and automation. These tools enhance data quality, facilitate regulatory compliance, increase productivity, and the ability better manage laboratory data and information. She has co-authored a book on LIMS, and authored over 5 dozen scientific, LIMS and informatics articles in peer reviewed journals. Dr. Paszko has been helping analytical testing laboratories understand regulatory compliance requirements (ISO 17025), leverage LIMS and automation to increase productivity, throughput and profitability. This approach has helped customers to outperform competitors with best in class Laboratory Information Management Systems Technology, Automation, Systems Integration to offer insights into laboratory and business intelligence.

                      Biography

                        Nick leads Automata’s fast growing Lab Automation team. An engineer at heart, he was awarded the Gibbs Proxime Accessit and Sir William Siemens Medal, recognising him as one of the top engineers in his cohort at Oxford University. In previous roles he has worked on the build of the aircraft carriers, the design of the next generation of nuclear submarines, and was the architect of a Big Data analytic tool which could identify issues within the supply chain of one of the UK’s largest grocery retailers. Nick joined Automata in 2019, initially leading product development teams, before moving to spearhead Automata’s entry into the Life Sciences market where he now leads the development of specialist solutions and services to meet increasing demand for automation from lab-based organisations.

                        Biography

                          Eric is an experienced leader within the biotechnology industry with a track record of bringing impactful capabilities to market. He currently serves as the Associate Director of Applications Engineering at Berkeley Lights, responsible for guiding products from the earliest stages of research and development through product launch. Today, he oversees R&D activities across Synthetic Biology and Antibody Therapeutics Applications at BLI, bringing disruptive innovation to market on the Beacon® optofluidic system. Eric is an accomplished author within the scientific community, including publications in Nature, PNAS, and Blood, as well as an inventor on several patents. Eric holds a BS in Materials Engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin—Madison in David Beebe’s research group building tools to interrogate cell biology utilizing microfluidic techniques.

                          Biography

                            Nishant Saxena is a product manager for protein and antibody purification portfolio in GenScript USA Inc. He has multiple years of lab experience in protein and antibody purification with a special focus on monoclonal antibody production using hybridoma technology. In this talk, he will present a newly designed automated protein and antibody purification platform, developed by GenScript, that is based on magnetic beads technology. Nishant holds a Ph.D. degree from Tsukuba University in Japan with double masters in biotechnology and nanotechnology.

                                  Ms. Vong is the owner and Principal of Vong BioPharma Consultants, founded in 2015. She has over 20 years of experience working in pharmaceutical, medical device and biotech industries. Her consulting clients include gene therapy, plasma processing, oral solid dosage, in vitro diagnostics, Covid-19 vaccine and cleaning chemical manufacturers. Elaine’s expertise encompasses process engineering, process validation, qualification and compliance initiatives. She has worked at Abbott Laboratories Diagnostics Division (ADD) in process engineering, process validation and facilities, utilities and equipment qualification. Elaine also has capital project expertise gained at ADD and  two architectural and engineering firms.

                                  Biography
                                    Jürgen Voorgang studied Mathematics at the University of Bonn with the focus on probability theory and stochastic. He developed the VALIDAT Method Validation software in the late eighties for pharmaceutical und chemical businesses during his freelancing work for international companies. After founding his companies headwork GbR and headwork-consulting GmbH he continued developing scientific software and introduced VALIDAT as the market leading software package for advanced method validation. Beginning of 2005 he merged with iCD. GmbH and now serves as the Head of Method Validation and VALIDAT Product Manager. He provides conference and training lectures as well as consulting for method validation with focus on ISO 17025, ICH and 21 CFR Part 11 for regulated businesses.

                                    Biography

                                      I am currently a Senior Scientist employed at Waters Corporation in Wilmslow, UK, performing research and development of applications and products for Clinical Research.  My primary area of research is vitamins and in particular vitamin D metabolites, steroid hormones and in-depth knowledge of offline and online automation. I joined Waters in 2010 as a Clinical Validation Scientist, playing a key role in verification activities for MassTrak reagent kits. I moved into my current role as a Senior Scientist in 2013, where I developed methods for a range of applications including vitamin D metabolites, vitamin B1 and B6 metabolites and a large panel of steroid hormones. I have presented work at conferences worldwide, gaining my first publication in Clinica Chimica Acta as well as having a patent application pending.

                                    • Aaron Wheeler, PhD
                                      Professor, University of Toronto
                                      Biography

                                        Aaron Wheeler completed his PhD in Chemistry at Stanford University in 2003. After a postdoctoral fellowship at UCLA, Wheeler moved to Canada in 2005 to join the faculty at the University of Toronto, where he is the Tier-1 Canada Research Chair in Microfluidic Bioanalysis. Wheeler is the editor-in-chief of the influential journal, Lab on a Chip, and is a recipient of the E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship.

                                      POSTER SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
                                      Virtual poster sessions offer the opportunity to present data to a global audience via a PDF poster and video summary, and discuss results with interested colleagues through email. Posters should be submitted as a PowerPoint file. Presentations should incorporate illustrative materials such as tables, graphs, photographs, and large-print text. This content is not peer-reviewed. Submission is free.

                                      SUBMIT YOUR ABSTRACT
                                      If you are interested in sponsoring a Poster for this virtual event and generate leads, the cost is $250 and you can submit the poster at advertise@labroots.com.

                                      All submitted abstracts will be reviewed and decisions regarding acceptance will be made as abstracts are received.
