A closed system prevents to transfer of matter in or out while allowing heat and light to enter and escape. A closed system is used in chemistry studies where temperature doesn't play a role. An example of a closed system is a cup of coffee with a lid on it as the coffee cannot move in and out but energy, in the form of heat, can transfer.
