    Myelin

Myelin: a lipid-rich (fatty) tissue layer formed around nerve cells. It acts as an electrical insulator, facilitating conduction in axons. In patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), the immune system attacks the central nervous systems resulting in damaged myelin sheaths.
