  • Henry Balfour, Jr, MD
    Professor of Pediatrics and Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, University of Minnesota
    Biography
      Dr. Balfour is Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. He also serves as Principal Investigator of Clinical Virology Programs. Dr. Balfour is recognized internationally as an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of herpesvirus infections, especially those due to EBV. Dr. Balfour received his MD degree from Columbia in 1966, completed his internship and residency at the University of Minnesota and Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in 1968, served as a pediatrician in the Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Base, Dayton, OH from 1968-70, and then completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Infectious Disease at the University of Minnesota in 1972. He has been on the University of Minnesota faculty ever since. He is board certified in Pediatrics.
    • Etienne Cavalier, PhD
      Professor of Clinical Chemistry at the University of Liege and Head of the Department of Clinical Chemistry at CHU de Liege
      Biography
        Etienne Cavalier was born in Liege, Belgium in 1971. He received his Master in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1994, his Advanced Master in Clinical Biology in 1999 and his PhD in Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences in 2010 from the University of Liege. Etienne Cavalier is now Professor of Clinical Chemistry at the University of Liege and Head of the Department of Clinical Chemistry at the CHU de Liege. His main research topics are linked with the phosphocalcic metabolism, renal function, frailty and sarcopenia. Etienne Cavalier has published over 200 papers, 6 book chapters and has an h-index of 25. Professor Cavalier also serves on the Clinica Chimica ACTA's editorial board.
      • Damien Gruson, PhD
        Professor, Associated Laboratory Director, Saint-Luc University Hospital, Brussels, Belgium
        Biography
          Professor Damien Gruson was awarded his degree of Pharmacist and later of Specialist in Laboratory Medicine from the Catholic University of Louvain, Brussels, Belgium. He joined the Department of Laboratory Medicine of the St-Luc University Hospital in 2008. He is now associated laboratory director and leading Endocrine Biology. He is also member of the research unit on Endocrinolgy Diabetes and Nutrition of the Catholic University of Louvain. Pr. D. Gruson has published numerous articles in several international peer-reviewed journals. Pr. D. Gruson is a member of the committee on distance learning of the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC), of the IFCC task force for young scientists (Chair between 2010 and 2012 and now consultant), a member of the division of Endocrinology of the American Association of Clinical Chemistry. Pr. D. Gruson is also a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology.

          Biography
            Dr. Markus Herrmann, MD, FRACP, Bolzano Hospital (Italy). Dr. Herrmann is a Clinical and Chemical Pathologist. He directs the Central Laboratory of Clinical Pathology at the District Hospital of Bolzano and is an Associate Professor at the University of Sydney. Dr. Herrmann is involved in numerous clinical and experimental research projects in the area of vitamin D, bone and energy metabolism.
          • Tiffany MacKenzie, PhD

            Biography
              Dr. Tiffany MacKenzie is the Scientific Affairs Manager focusing on Infectious Disease at DiaSorin, Inc. She came to DiaSorin with 10+ years of laboratory experience: 3 years as an undergraduate research associate during her undergrad career at University of Wisconsin-Madison studying Molecular Biology, 3 years in Research and Development at the start-up company Access Genetics, LLC in Eden Prairie, MN developing HSV multiplex PCR assays and 4.5 years working toward her PhD in Pharmacology at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. She joined DiaSorin in Sept of last year (2013) shortly after completing her PhD.
            • Kevin Martin, MD, MB, BCh, FASN
              Professor of Internal Medicine, Director of the Division of Nephrology, Saint Louis University School of Medicine
              Biography
                Dr. Martin is Director of the Division of Nephrology at Saint Louis University and Professor of Internal Medicine. He has served as Chairman of the General Medicine B Study Section of the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Martin's clinical research interests include parathyroid hormone, Vitamin D metabolism and secondary hyperthyroidism. He has authored 230 publications in professional journals, including The New England Journal of Medicine, Kidney International, and The American Journal of Kidney Diseases and Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
              • Gregory Plotnikoff, MD, MTS, FACP
                Senior Consultant, Minnesota Personalized Medicine
                Biography
                  Gregory A. Plotnikoff, MD, MTS, FACP, is a board-certified internist and pediatrician in active clinical practice who has received numerous national and international awards for research and education. He is the lead author of one book, 25 textbook chapters and more than 60 articles in the peer-reviewed medical literature. His 2003 article on vitamin D deficiency and chronic, non-specific musculoskeletal pain is one of the most highly-cited articles in the history of the Mayo Clinic Proceedings. He is a graduate of Carleton College, Harvard University Divinity School and the University of Minnesota Medical School.
                • D Sudhaker Rao, MB,BS, FACP, FACE
                  Division Head, Bone and Mineral Metabolism, Henry Ford Health System
                  Biography

                    Dr. Rao is the Section Head, Bone & Mineral Metabolism & Director of Bone & Mineral Research Laboratory, Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, MI, USA, a position he has held continuously since 1995. It is the best bone histomorphometry lab in the state, and one of the best in the country. Under his direction, the lab has been conducting both basic and clinical research, and published extensively on the pathogenesis of bone fragility, age related bone loss, mechanism of atypical fractures, role of vitamin D in parathyroid adenoma size and disease expression, and on parathyroid tumorigenesis.

                    Dr. Rao has more than 100 peer reviewed papers, 100 symposium proceedings, abstracts, and letters to the editor, and 10 book chapters. He is a founding member of the Indian Society of Bone & Mineral Research, which he helped launch in 1997.

                    Dr. Rao has received a number of awards including the Willard O. Thomson travelling scholar award from the American college of Physicians in 1986, the Boy Frame award from the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research in 1999. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) and of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (FACE)

                  • Ajay Rao, MD, MMSc
                    Assistant Professor of Medicine, Section of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, Center for Metabolic Disease and Research, Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University
                    Biography
                      Dr. Ajay Rao is a board-certified endocrinologist specializing in diabetes and cardiovascular disease and the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Rao completed his Internal Medicine residency training at the Lahey Clinical Medical Center in Burlington, MA and followed this with a 2-year clinical endocrinology fellowship at the Tulane University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, LA where he was involved in landmark clinical trials in diabetes such as ACCORD and TINSAL-T2D. He also went through a critical care fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, PA before finishing a 3-year research fellowship at the Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA. Dr. Rao also received a Masters in Medical Sciences from the Harvard Medical School. His clinical expertise is in diabetes and cardiovascular disease and has research interests in diabetes and residual cardiovascular risk.
                    • Richard Steece, PhD
                      Director, Public Health Laboratory, State of Tennessee Department of Health
                      Biography
                        Dr. Richard Steece is certified as the Public Health Laboratory Director at the State of Tennessee Department of Health. He came into this role with over 30 years of experience and is one of the nation's leading public health laboratory experts. Among his multiple admirable roles driving public health initiatives, Dr. Steece has recently served as the National Chlamydia Laboratory Coordinator for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and as Science Advisor to the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL). Most recently, Dr. Steece is the incoming chair of the 2015 STD subcommittee for APHL, and he is continuing this appointment into 2016. Prior to his public health career working with every city, county and state public health laboratory in the US, Dr. Steece earned his PhD in Biology/Microbiology.
                      • Nicholas Tritos, MD, DSc, MMSc, FACP
                        Associate Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School
                        Biography
                          Dr. Nicholas A. Tritos serves as Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a pituitary endocrinologist at the Neuroendocrine Unit, Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He is a graduate of the University of Athens School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School. He completed his residency in internal medicine and fellowship training in endocrinology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Dr. Tritos' clinical and research interests include pituitary tumors, growth hormone and energy homeostasis. He has authored or co-authored over 110 publications, including peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in the field. He serves as associate editor for Endocrine Practice, an editorial board member for several endocrine journals, and a peer reviewer for numerous endocrine and other medical journals. He has also served as a member of several national and international committees of the Endocrine Society and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.
                        • Reinhold Vieth, PhD
                          University of Toronto Professor, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, and Department of Nutritional Sciences, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
                          Biography
                            Reinhold Vieth is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Toronto in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, as well as in the Department of Nutritional Sciences. In 2012 he received the Award for Research Excellence, from the Canadian Society of Clinical Chemists. He is an expert on the clinical nutrition, pharmacology and safety of vitamin D, with well over 100 publications on the subject.   He has served as an expert advising on vitamin D-related matters for the Institutes of Medicine, and the Centers for Disease Control in Washington, as well as the American Geriatric Society. Recently, he served on a committee of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences advising Health Canada on ways to modify public policy in that country in response to the new RDA's for vitamin D. He has been the principal investigator on many clinical trials involving vitamin D, and maintains a deep interest in the difficulties that evidence-based medicine faces when it comes to deciding on the role of nutrients, particularly vitamin D, for the prevention of disease.
                          • Joesph Wiencek, PhD
                            Clinical Chemistry Postdoctoral Fellow, Vanderbilt University Medical Center
                            Biography
                              Dr. Joesph Wiencek, PhD completed his undergraduate education at The Ohio State University. Following this he received his Ph.D. in the joint Clinical - Bioanalytical Chemistry doctoral program through Cleveland State University and the Cleveland Clinic. Secondary to his graduate research in hematology and coagulation, he completed a comprehensive clinical chemistry internship at the Cleveland Clinic's Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Institute. Currently, Dr. Wiencek is a second year Clinical Chemistry Fellow at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. His clinical interests revolve around endocrinology and pediatric clinical chemistry. Dr. Wiencek, also, serves as an officer for several divisions within the American Association for Clinical Chemistry.
                            • Jonathan Williams, MD, MMSc
                              Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Associate Physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Division of Endocrinology
                              Biography
                                Dr. Williams is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Associate Physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Hypertension.  He has dedicated his research efforts to unravelling the intricate relationship between genetics and environment with respect to individual susceptibility to cardiometabolic disease.  He has over 40 original publications describing the physiologic and pathologic interplay of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system activity and dietary salt intake in hypertension, insulin resistance, heart disease, and obesity.  His work is funded through National Institutes of Health, industry, and private foundation support.   Dr. Williams is an active program developer, course director, and mentor for the Harvard Medical School's Scholars in Clinical Research Program, which is a Master's degree granting program designed to train the upcoming generation of patient-oriented physician scientists.  He is also an Associate Editor of the journal Metabolism, and serves on the Board of Directors for the Association for Patient-oriented Research and for the Association for Clinical and Translational Science.
                              • Alison Woodworth, PhD, DABCC, FACB
                                Associate Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Medical Director of Chemistry, University of Kentucky Medical Center
                                Biography
                                  Dr. Alison Woodworth PhD, DABCC, FACB is currently Associate Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Where she is also Medical Director of Clinical Chemistry. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Clinical Chemistry and currently serves as a director on the ABCC exam committee. She is actively involved in teaching and has directed the clinical chemistry fellowship training program. Dr. Woodworth is actively involved in several national organizations including AACC and ACLPS. She serves on the board of directors and as the Chair of the editorial board of the Scientific Shorts Committee for the AACC Academy as well as on the executive council of ACLPS. Her noteworthy contributions to clinical and translational research in the areas of sepsis, endocrinology, and Maternal/Fetal Medicine have resulted in multiple publications and awards.
                                • Professor Doctor Armin Zittermann
                                  Head of the Center for Clinical Studies in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery
                                  Biography
                                    Prof. Dr. Armin Zittermann is Head of the Center for Clinical Studies in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the Heart and Diabetes Center in Bad Oeynhausen, Germany. Prof. Zittermann also lectures at the Institute of Nutrition and Food Sciences at the University of Bonn on specific aspects of food security. His research focuses include the prevalence and the consequences of insufficient levels of vitamin D in humans, in particularly in patients with cardiovascular diseases. Furthermore, Prof. Zittermann investigates the confounding factors on outcomes of cardiac surgery patients, including the influence of immunosuppressants in heart transplant patients. His scientific work includes various fields such as biochemistry, physiology, epidemiology, nutrition, heart surgery and statistics. Prof. Zittermann has published more than 200 journal and book articles and has presented more than 250 lectures (national and international). He is a reviewer for a number of international scientific journals and serves on the editorial board of various nutritional medicine journals.
