Join us for the 2nd Annual Cell Biology Virtual Event, as we discuss recent discoveries in biological research, advancements in techniques, and tool developments in cell research. POSTER SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Virtual poster sessions offer the opportunity to present data to a global audience via a PDF poster and video summary, and discuss results with interested colleagues through email. Posters should be submitted as a PowerPoint file. Presentations should incorporate illustrative materials such as tables, graphs, photographs, and large-print text. This content is not peer reviewed. Submission is free.

  • Abstract describing the poster

All submitted abstracts will be reviewed and decisions regarding acceptance will be made as abstracts are received. You will be notified within one week of receipt about acceptance. Further details and registration materials will be provided at that time. You do not have to be present in order to have a poster displayed. Only those abstracts approved by LabRoots may display posters at this event.

If accepted, you will also have the opportunity to record a 3-5 minute summary video for each poster. LabRoots will work with each individual to create these videos. Video links and email contact information will be included on each poster displayed.

    Application Specialist at Phase Holographic Imaging
    Biography
      Dr. Alm has been an Application Specialist at Phase Holographic Imaging (PHI) for nine years now. Working with digital holography is a challenge and her background in cell biology is very useful. Learning tissue culture during her PhD studies in cell biology at Lund University, Sweden, as well as the continued training during her postdoc at Roswell Park, Buffalo, NY, provided important insights for the development of the technology. The years thereafter, when she was working as a researcher and a teacher at Lund University, have also contributed to her knowledge of both cell requirements and of cell biologist requirements. PHI has developed a cell analysis system based on digital holography, and she has been part of the development almost from the beginning.

      Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at Phamacen North-West University (NWU)
      Biography
        I completed my B.Sc in Biological Sciences at the North-West University (NWU) in 2010, followed by a Hons. B.Sc in Biochemistry (NWU) in 2011. In 2012 I accepted a position as senior laboratory technician in the department Pharmaceutics at NWU. This enabled me to pursue a M.Sc in Pharmaceutics (2013-2014). In 2014 I was invited to join the international Golden Key honour society for my academic achievements as part of the top 15% of students in my field at NWU. I completed my Ph.D in Pharmaceutics in 2017 under the guidance of Dr C. Gouws, Dr K. Wrzesinksi and Prof S.Hamman. My thesis focused on the establishment of three-dimensional cell culture models for drug bio-transformation and toxicity studies. I was awarded the South African National Research Foundation (NRF) Innovation doctoral scholarship and travel award in 2016 and 2017. With this award I was able to spend six months at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) in Odense, Denmark, learning the art of three-dimensional spheroid culturing. Since 2014 I have published five first author publications in international peer-reviewed journals. In 2014 I presented at the Young Scientist award of the 35th conference of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences of South Africa. I have also acted as reviewer for the journal Current Pharmacology Reports, and hold membership to the South African Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Currently I am employed in the faculty of Health Sciences at the NWU as a post-doctoral research fellow, focusing on the development of three-dimensional cell culture models and platforms for cancer research, bio-transformation and toxicity screening of pre-clinical lead compounds or traditional herbal medicine.

        Biography
          Calley Hirsch has been a Development Engineer / Scientist II at CCRM in Toronto for 8 months, where she specializes in upstream lentiviral production and gene delivery technologies. Prior to working at CCRM, Calley was a postdoctoral fellow at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute in Toronto and MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston working on pluripotent stem cells and somatic cell reprogramming. Calley received her PhD from the University of Saskatchewan.
        • Bo Huang, PhD
          Professor, Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Biochemistry and Biophysics, University of California, San Francisco
          Biography
            Dr. Bo Huang received his B.S. degree in Chemistry from Peking University, China, in 2001 and Ph. D. degree in Chemistry at Stanford University in 2006. After finishing postdoc work at Harvard University in 2009, he joined UCSF as an Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, with a joint appointment in the Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2014 and Professor in 2017. Dr. Huang's research work encompasses the areas of single molecule biophysics, microscopy, and cell biology. Dr. Huang has received many awards, including the GE Healthcare and Science Prize for Young Life Scientists, Searle Scholarship, Packard Fellowship for Science and Engineering, the NIH Director's New Innovator Award, the American Society for Cell Biology Young Life Scientist Award, and UCSF Byers Award for Basic Science.
          • Dr. Michael Johnson
            Chief Executive Officer - Visikol Inc.
            Biography
              Dr. Michael Johnson is a 2017 Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree and the CEO of Visikol Inc., which is a drug discovery research organization focused on advanced in vitro models, 3D tissue imaging, and digital pathology. Michael holds an undergraduate degree in Biology from Muhlenberg College and a PhD from Rutgers University. Michael's research background has focused on a number of projects, from remote sensing research with NASA, to building light sheet microscopes for 3D tissue imaging, and producing algal-derived biofuels. Prior to leading Visikol, Michael worked on several biotech-based entrepreneurial pursuits and is very passionate about translating cutting edge research into life-changing commercial technologies.
