Join LabRoots in bringing the microbiology research community together at the 3rd Annual Microbiology and Immunology Virtual Event! During the free, two-day event, participants will explore and discover new concepts, tools and techniques to apply to ongoing research and diagnostics. Microbiology and Immunology cover an array of industries and disciplines, encompassing various research areas including pharmaceuticals, medicine, agriculture, and space. The development of new techniques and the ability to sequence organisms without the need to grow them in the laboratory has opened up a new world of microbial diversity and complexity we know little about.

With the progress made toward learning more about the world of microbiology and disease, the need for more rapid diagnosis, increased standardization of testing and greater adaptability to manage threats from newly evolved infectious microorganisms will become more and more apparent. The combination of the new tools being developed along with advancements in basic knowledge can lead to profound changes and growth in Microbiology and Immunology.

POSTER SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Virtual poster sessions offer the opportunity to present data to a global audience via a PDF poster and video summary, and discuss results with interested colleagues through email. Posters should be submitted as a PowerPoint file. Presentations should incorporate illustrative materials such as tables, graphs, photographs, and large-print text. This content is not peer reviewed. Submission is free.

All submitted abstracts will be reviewed and decisions regarding acceptance will be made as abstracts are received. You will be notified within one week of receipt about acceptance. Further details and registration materials will be provided at that time. You do not have to be present in order to have a poster displayed. Only those abstracts approved by LabRoots may display posters at this event.

If accepted, you will also have the opportunity to record a 3-5 minute summary video for each poster. LabRoots will work with each individual to create these videos. Video links and email contact information will be included on each poster displayed.

    Biography
      Dr. Jennifer Gardy is both a scientist and a science communicator. In her scientific life, she's a Senior Scientist in Genomics at the BC Centre for Disease Control and an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia, where she holds a Canada Research Chair in Public Health Genomics. Jennifer's lab uses genome sequencing to understand how infectious diseases spread in populations. When she's not studying microbes, Jennifer works in science media. She regularly hosts episodes of CBC Television's long-running science documentary series The Nature of Things, appears as a guest host and contributor on Discovery Chanel's nightly science newsmagazine Daily Planet, and is a frequent guest on many other programs. She wrote a children's book about microbes for OwlKids Books in 2014, and regularly speaks to science graduate students about how to communicate their research effectively.
    • Jonas Korlach, PhD
      Chief Scientific Officer, Pacific Biosciences
      Biography
        Jonas Korlach was appointed Chief Scientific Officer of Pacific Biosciences in July 2012. He was previously a Scientific Fellow, supporting commercial development of the PacBio RS II system and performing research aimed at developing new applications for SMRT technologies. He co-invented the SMRT technology with Stephen Turner, Ph.D., Pacific Biosciences Founder and Chief Technology Officer, when the two were graduate students at Cornell University. Dr. Korlach joined Pacific Biosciences as the company's eighth employee in 2004. Previously, he was a Postdoctoral Researcher at Cornell University. Dr. Korlach is the recipient of multiple grants, an inventor on 70 issued U.S. patents and 61 international patents, and an author of over 70 scientific studies on the principles and applications of SMRT technology, including publications in Nature, Science, and PNAS. In 2013, Dr. Korlach was honored by the Obama White House as an Immigrant Innovator "Champion of Change." He received both his Ph.D. and his M.S. degrees in Biochemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology from Cornell, and received M.S. and B.A. degrees in Biological Sciences from Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany.

        Postdoctoral Scholar, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard
        Biography
          Allison J. Lopatkin, PhD, works as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Institute for Medical Engineering and Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Infectious Disease and Microbiome group at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, as a member of the Collins Lab. She completed her PhD training in Biomedical Engineering at Duke University, and her BS training in Applied Mathematics at the University of Rochester. Allison's work uses quantitative methods to study the spread of antibiotic resistance within bacterial populations, including synthetic biology approaches and mathematical modeling. Her current research interests include evolutionary dynamics of bacterial communities, leveraging horizontal gene transfer to target pathogens, and adjuvant discovery to extend the efficacy of existing antibiotics.
        • Mohammad Qadir, PhD
          President & Chief Scientific Officer, Fusion Genomics
          Biography
            Dr Qadir's training is in genetics and molecular biology. Dr Qadir has over 17 years of research experience. The last ten were at the British Columbia Cancer Agency where he worked with world-renowned experts in genomics and drug development. Dr Qadir is the co-inventor of the CHILDSeq-Sarcoma assay and CHILDDecode (part of FUSIONCloud™). Dr Qadir oversees all the scientific aspects of research and development efforts at FUSION GENOMICS and also serves as the interface for all collaborators.
          • Kevin Redding, PhD
            Professor, School of Molecular Sciences, Arizona State University
            Biography
              Kevin Redding received a B.A. in biochemistry from Rice University in 1987 and a Ph.D. degree in biochemistry from Stanford University in 1993, working with Robert Fuller. He was an National Science Foundation (NSF) Plant Biology Postdoctoral Fellow and a Human Frontiers in Science Postdoctoral Fellow and worked with Jean-David Rochaix at the University of Geneva. He started his academic career at the University of Alabama in 1998, received a DuPont Young Professor award and NSF CAREER award. After a one-year stint at the Institut de Biologie Physico-Chimique in Paris as a Fulbright Scholar, he joined ASU in 2008. His current research interests are in structure/function studies of photosynthetic reaction centers, re-engineering photosynthetic electron transfer, and fundamental processes in heliobacteria.

                Assistant Professor of Pathology, Assistant Director of Clinical Microbiology and Immunology Laboratories, The University of Chicago Medicine
                Biography
                  Vera Tesic, MD, MS, D (ABMM), works as an assistant professor of pathology and assistant medical director of clinical microbiology and immunology laboratories, at the University of Chicago Medicine, Chicago, Illinois. She completed her training in pathology at the University of Illinois at Chicago, followed by a fellowship in clinical microbiology at the University of Utah, ARUP Laboratories. Her areas of interest include application of new technologies into clinical laboratory practice and implementation of cost effective diagnostic tests for infectious diseases, with a particular focus on syphilis testing.

                  Assistant Professor of Clinical Pathology, University of Illinois at Chicago
                  Biography
                    He is the director of Coagulation and director of Point-of-Care Testing at University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System in Chicago, and Blood Bank/Transfusion Medicine attending physician in the same institution. From 2015-2017 he held the position of Interim Director of Clinical Pathology. He is also the Laboratory Medical Director at Shriners Hospital for Children in Chicago.
